All my landscape work is inspired by my surroundings. I seek out new surroundings to create new work. I prefer to have a meaningful connection with the location whether it's through my own history, associations and experience or somebody else's who has inspired me.
I usually do background reading about the places to get to know them deeper. The work begins from direct observation and if I can I shall complete it on-site or else I will make drawings and colour studies on-site and create the work back in the studio. This means memory becomes a significant aspect of the work as opposed to the strictly observational. The feeling and sensations of a place is important to me and I try to get that into the work. Somewhere in the space between the drawings, the studies, and the memories lies the point of it all. To get to that elusive place and express it is the challenge.
Drawing is all-important in order to understand what it is that might be interesting about the landscape or the figure. Colour is always significant as it has such a bearing on the mood. My preferred methods of recording are drawing in pen on paper and working on my iPad. The iPad is like having a tiny mobile studio in the pocket. You can do so much with it.
I usually work in oil paint for the paintings. For me, oil is the king of materials as it has such powerful qualities. It can retain it's colour depth either working in impasto or transparently, it is malleable, liquifiable and can also be used to create thick and luscious textures. The paint surface is key for my method as it plays such an important part of the viewer experience. If all the elements are working the painting transforms what might be a flat illusion into something that engages the senses and turns observing it into a physical experience.
My work is held in private collections in Europe and North America and I am available for commissions and mentoring. Email me if you have any proposals, queries or questions and/or fill out the subscribe form to be the first to see my new work.
